Norwich Tech Visits Davis-Standard
Students from Norwich Technical High School in Norwich, Connecticut, visited Davis-Standard recently to see first-hand how the tools they are learning in school are applied in the workplace. Freshmen in the Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Course at Norwich Tech visited the company with their instructor, Thuan Huynh. After meeting with company engineers and discussing extrusion and the importance of plastics in everyday life, the students learned how drafting and engineering were vital in manufacturing Davis-Standard extruders.
“It was a great opportunity to encourage students to enter a technical field for their career,” said Rick Boulanger, Davis-Standard’s Engineering Manager. “We showed them what to expect from a career in the drafting and design field using state-of-the-art CAD tools to create new drawings and new parts which would enable them to convert customer ideas into successful products.”
The students viewed a presentation on drafting with an emphasis on solid modeling to model parts, then toured Davis-Standard’s manufacturing floor to see extrusion machinery being assembled. The visit ended with a tour of the company’s technical center, where the students could view and aid in controlling one of Davis-Standard’s signature extruders. The extruder was running a polycarbonate, commonly used in packaging.
